When I was a kid in Oklahoma my grandparents renovated their small one-car garage into a TV room. This new bonus room was lined with bookshelves containing back issues of National Geographic magazine. Through their amazing photography, the magazines provided a landlocked kid a glimpse at life in the most distant corners of the world. Yes, there was Africa, Japan and India, but frequently there was a look at the allure of the West – what National Geographic called The Golden Magnet in its May 1966 issue. The dusty pages of vintage magazines. Perhaps this is when I heard my first call of California.
