the first bike lanes.

In researching for inspiring tales for the FW 2014 collection, I ran across this little gem. In the early sixties bicyclists in Davis, CA were being run off the road by the growing number of cars. A small group of citizens – inspired by a visit to bicycle friendly Amsterdam – had a vision for what Davis could be and began lobbying to create bike lanes. Finally, in the fall of 1967 the first bike lanes in the U.S. were built on Sycamore Lane and 8th Street. Today Davis is known as “The Bicycle Capital of America” and the pioneer behind the thousands of U.S. cities that now have bike lanes and paths. Here’s a look at the Davis bike culture in the early days.
